Celebrating Dads on Father’s Day 2026 in Darlington

With Father’s Day quickly approaching on June 21, if you haven’t bought your Dad the perfect gift then we have put together some alternative ideas to show him just how much you love him. Darlington has so much to offer gift-wise, including days and meals out. A special occasion, like Father’s Day, is a fantastic time to take a look at the options our town has to offer.

Have a historic day out at Hopetown Museum

Hopetown Museum, based on McNay Street, is perfect for train-lover Dads. We all know one (or have one)! Hopetown Museum is a free attraction and explores the heritage of the railways and how history started right here in Darlington. It houses over 30,000 objects showcasing the history of the railways and even features an immersive ride.

Treat Dad to a Sunday Roast at one of Darlington’s restaurants

When it comes to a classic Sunday dinner, Darlington is not short of them. There are plenty of fantastic eateries that offer a delicious Sunday dinner. If you’re looking for a town centre location, why not check out the Sunday menus at Oven, Blackwell Grange, Toby Carvery or The Loft Steakhouse?

Be sure to double check the menus if you’re heading out on actual Father’s Day for Sunday dinner as some lucky Dads may be in for a further treat. Blackwell Grange Hotel, Bannatyne Hotel and Zuu are three eateries where Dads who are dining will be entitled to an extra surprise.

Get competitive as a family at The DC’s bowling alley

The Dolphin Centre is now home to a five-lane bowling alley, making it a perfect place to enjoy Father’s Day together as a family. Book a lane and get competitive with each other, maybe even allow Dad to win. It is Father’s Day after all! Afterwards, why not head into the town centre for a bite to eat and prolong the celebrations?

Delight Dad with a voucher for an independent or high street shop

Dads are renowned for not treating themselves to new clothes, even when their wardrobe is sometimes in desperate need of a refresh. Purchase a voucher from one of Darlington’s bustling independent shops, or a high street favourite, and let Dad choose himself a new pair of socks or some fancy shoes.

Take Dad out for a refreshing drink

Like the eateries, Darlington is also not short on welcoming bars and pubs. Across the town centre, there are many bars and pubs where you can take Dad for a delightful drink. In pubs such as The Red Lion, The Darlington Flyer and The Turk’s Head, you could also challenge him to a game of pool or darts.

Watch a show together at The Hippodrome

Why not treat Dad to a night at the theatre? The Hippodrome has some fantastic shows happening over the coming weeks and months. There are a wide range of plays, comedians, tribute acts and musicals that are all going to be gracing our local theatre very soon. Take a look at What’s On here.

Have a nostalgic trip to the cinema to watch Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 has just landed at Vue cinema, and it is the perfect excuse to take a cinema trip with Dad as well as eating all your favourite snacks. Whether you’re wanting to bask in nostalgia or introduce your Dad to these fun characters, this is a great way to spend an afternoon together.

Things to do:

Looking for a sweet treat? Kaspa's is the UK's biggest dessert parlour and one of Darlington’s top spots for desserts. Grab freshly made waffles, crepes, cakes, shakes and more with the kids this half term.

Burn off some of those desserts with a good soft play session. Under the Sea, Darlington’s beloved nautical themed soft play, offer lots of interactive features and fun characters. This Georgian hotel boasts eight boutique rooms for a truly relaxing stay, plus enjoy fresh, mouth-watering seafood and organic wines in the hotel restaurant, Saltfish.

If you want something a little slower paced, maybe you’d like a countryside option instead? For a self-catering stay, look no further than Kip & Nook, a gorgeous glamping experience with containers, a loft and a barn that takes guests completely off-grid. Or if you like your home comforts, take a look at Walworth Castle. This 1150 castle offers modern and stylish rooms with vistas over the Walworth countryside. It’s ideal for something a bit more unique and with lots of character.

For the height of sumptuous staycation, why not book a room at Rockliffe Hall? This 5 star hotel sits on a 375 acre site, complete with a spa, golf course and incredible restaurant, making it a fabulously refined destination. You can either choose to spend your whole weekend on the estate or venture out into the surrounding area for walks and shopping.

You can visit Origins for beautiful homewares, Leggs for designer fashion or Bliss Gifts for the most perfect trinkets. There’s even a whole community of independents in the Indoor Market Hall! But if you like shopping with high street names, there’s plenty of those in the Cornmill Centre, including Primark, Next and Warren James, to name just a few.

Places to eat

Darlington town centre is home to a huge range of restaurants that serve cuisine from all around the world, so there’s endless options available. There are a fantastic variety of Indian restaurants to choose from, like Abu’s on Duke Street, Café Spice which is tucked away on Clarks Yard, and award-winning Bangladeshi street food eatery Babul’s on Skinnergate. If it’s Italian food you like, try out Uno Momento on Blackwellgate, Al Forno on Skinnergate or Neapolitan pizzeria, Stable Hearth, on Duke Street.

For something a bit different, try out Casa Del Alma for Mexican food cooked by MasterChef’s Matei Baran. Or if you like to try a bit of all sorts, you’ll love Tapas Bar, where you can have Greek meze and Spanish tapas at the same time. Or if it’s something more indulgent and elegant you’re after, you’ll love The Bay Horse in Hurworth. This multi award-winning venue has been featured in the Michelin guide and for very good reason!

Street food is always a really popular choice and it doesn’t get much more laidback than with the street vendors in the Indoor Market, like Haus Der Bratwurste and Crave. Their food is great to enjoy while at the market’s weekly quiz night! Or if you want street food in more of a restaurant setting, look no further than Salt. This spot serves up the most delicious smash burgers, loaded fries, bao buns and so much more. It’s a total hidden gem on Grange Road and is definitely worth a look for some casual dining.

How to get here

Darlington is incredibly well connected, so no matter where you are, it’s simple to get there. There are regular trains from major cities like Durham, Newcastle and York that run directly to the town with plenty of hotels within walking distance. It’s also very easy to reach by road, with the entire borough being accessible on the A1, A66 or A19.

Get ready to say "I do" in Darlington

It’s coming up to wedding season! If you're currently planning your big day, one place where you can find absolutely everything you need is Darlington. From high street names to independent retailers, there’s a shop to make your moment one to remember. Take a look at our recommendations to find exactly what you need!

Wedding dresses

Shopping for a dress is one of the most special parts of the wedding planning process. No matter if you have a dream dress in mind or need to shop around to get some ideas of what you might like, there’s several places in town that can help. Poppy Bridal on Duke Street is a gorgeous boutique stocking a range of fantastic designers, like Maggie Sottero and White One, at affordable prices. Or there’s Happily Ever After Bridal just outside of the town centre in Cockerton, who pride themselves on offering top quality and exquisite dresses to people of all sizes.

If you’re looking for something that’s more eco and budget-friendly, you may like Something Old Something New in Houndgate Mews. This spot is all about preloved bridalwear, so all of the dresses here are second hand, but still incredible quality. And what’s even better is you can buy a dress at the fraction of the retail price! It’s kind to the environment and kind to your purse.

Suits

Just as important as the dress is the suit and Darlington is home to some fantastic menswear boutiques that offer some sensational options. Affleck and Moffat on Duke Street have stood the test of time, celebrating 100 years as a leading suit hire business. There are styles to suit all kinds of wedding style or theme, plus accessories to help you finish the look.

If you want to buy rather than hire, All About The Suit on Northumberland Street is the perfect option. You can find a dazzling range of colours, materials and cuts to really complement your style and all are available for you to buy and keep. Or if you’d like something a bit more personalised, Geoffrey Gillow on Grange Road can help you to pick out shirts, trousers and shoes to build the perfect look.

Rings and jewellery

Of course, a wedding isn’t complete without the rings and Darlington has several high street names that can offer you a glittering selection to look at. H Samuel and Warren James are both in the Cornmill Shopping Centre, giving you the perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon trying on some rings. Both offer pieces of incredible quality and there’s options for both masculine and feminine rings. Just over the road in Queen Street Shopping Centre, you’ll find F Hinds as well, so there’s lots to choose from if you want to buy from a familiar brand.

If you want to shop small and find something a little more unique, there’s a great community of independent jewellers in the town. Ingledews on Post House Wynd are diamond specialists, so they have some beautiful engagement rings, but lots of wedding rings and bridal jewellery to complete your outfit too. Or if you want something that’s totally custom to you, AD Designs on Skinnergate specialise in one off commissions. Whether you want gold, silver, platinum, a plain band or gemstones, they would love to work with you.

Flowers

Flowers can really tie your wedding theme together, no matter if you’re going for an all white look, something more boho or bright and colourful. Heavenly Scent on Bondgate is a family run florist and they offer flowers to suit all tastes and budgets. You can visit them in the shop to get some inspiration, then book a consultation to sort exactly what you’d like. From bridal bouquets to buttonholes, they’ll be happy to help.

Flowers By Nattrass are out in Hurworth and they have a huge portfolio of wedding venues that they’ve dressed. Why not go in store and take a look to see if they’ve provided flowers for your venue before? They also have lots of flower accessories to hire too, like vases, stands, mirrors and tealights, so it’s a one stop shop.

Mother of the Bride or Groom

As much as it’s the happy couples’ day, the mum’s of brides and grooms will definitely be in the limelight too, so they’ll be looking for the perfect outfit. Darlington is home to a fabulous House of Fraser, so there’s multiple brands and sections in there to help mums find the best thing to wear. From dresses to fascinators, there’s multiple floors of things to choose from, as well as a luxury makeup hall for a little extra treat.

As well as the department store, there’s plenty of independent boutiques to look at too. Joel Alexander on Grange Road is a specialist in formal womenswear, so you can expect to find gorgeously elegant pieces in a range of colours, prints and materials. There’s also Leggs Fashion on Skinnergate, which is a hotspot for glamorous and limited edition pieces from big designer names, like Guess and Valentino. She’ll look and feel like a million dollars! But if it’s handmade fascinators she wants, look no further than Julie’s of Darlington in the Cornmill Shopping Centre. She’s been making headwear for over 30 years and puts her heart into each one. They’re completely unique and would be an amazing addition to a wedding outfit.

Darlington Christmas Lights Switch On

Start Darlington’s official countdown to Christmas with the Lights Switch On. This is an incredibly popular local event, featuring live performances and an appearance from Santa Claus, the big man himself, and finishing off with a short firework display. This is the perfect winter event to get yourself and your family in the festive spirit and to see Darlington come alive with Christmas magic. This event will be held on Sunday 17 November with entertainment starting from 4pm.

Enchanted Forest Reindeer Trail

The newly redeveloped Hopetown visitor attraction will be decking the halls of the historic Carriage Works and transforming the site into a fantastical forest of magical trees and woodland creatures. You’re invited to take a wondrous walk, hunt for clues and find all of the reindeer to help Santa get on his way for Christmas Eve. This event will be running from Tuesday 26 November to Tuesday 31 December and tickets cost £5 per child. As entry to the Hopetown site is free, you’ll be able to explore the museum too! Find more info about the Enchanted Forest Reindeer Trail.

The Big Christmas Assembly

We all love a bit of nostalgia and no one knows that better than James B Partridge, the creator of Primary School Assembly Bangers Live. His shows sell out all across the country and he’s bringing the Christmas edition to the Darlington Hippodrome on Thursday 28 November. He’ll be playing all of our favourite festive tunes that we sang in school assemblies and, of course, singing along is absolutely encouraged. There’ll also be musical surprises, throwback mashups and reflections on Christmas back in the day. Book The Big Christmas Assembly tickets.

Sleeping Beauty

Panto is always such a huge hit as we get closer to Christmas and the Darlington Hippodrome are renowned for having a top show for the whole family to enjoy. This year, it’s all about Sleeping Beauty, the classic story of Princess Aurora who pricks her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel and forced to sleep for 100 years. Starring Lee Mead as the Prince and Su Pollard as the evil Aunt Carabosse, this is sure to be spectacular! The pantomime is on from Friday 6 to Tuesday 31 December and you can get your tickets Book Sleeping Beauty tickets.

Santa at Hopetown

As if the Enchanted Forest Reindeer Trail wasn’t enough, you can also meet the big man himself at Hopetown this winter. Every Friday from 6 December to 23 December, there will be a two hour event where children can make a holly crown and listen to some traditional, festive storytelling. They’ll also get to meet Santa and receive an early Christmas gift, so this is a great option to really get into the seasonal spirit. Santa at Hopetown to book your spaces.

Ice Sculpture Trail

There’s nothing that says winter quite like an ice sculpture trail and Darlington’s will head to town on Saturday 7 December. This trail is always a fantastic and exciting way to explore the centre, with hand carved sculptures guiding the way. There’ll be a whole host of characters and winter-themed icons to find, so keep your eyes peeled. And don’t forget to snap a selfie with your favourite sculpture and share it on social media!

Darlington is easy to reach by rail with the station connecting to major cities like Durham, Newcastle and York. Why not make a weekend of it and book a stay in a hotel?

Last Train Home Festival returns to Darlington for seventh year

The popular live music and comedy festival which champions grassroots acts is set to return to Darlington town centre on Saturday 7 September. Last Train Home festival is an all-day multi-venue event organised by Tracks Darlington with five stages across venues such as The Forum, Darlington Hippodrome and The Hullabaloo Theatre hosting live music from national and local artists. The day will also bring stand-up sets from upcoming comedians via the Hilarity Bites Comedy Club.

The 2024 festival line-up includes alt-indie headliners Avalanche Party, local musician Finn Forster, Isle of Wight natives Coach Party, plus singer-songwriter Michael Gallagher on the music stages, with comedians Bethany Black and Mick Ferry and even more music and comedy acts to be announced. Up and coming North East act Jodie Nicholson also joins the festival which will finish with an afterparty DJ set from James Watson at The Forum.

Last Train Home Festival is curated and managed by Tracks Darlington, a community focused arts organisation, utilising funds from Arts Council England, Creative Darlington and Tees Valley Combined Authority.

Sarah Wilson, Co-founder and Events Manager at Tracks Darlington says: “'We are so excited to be able to bring the Last Train Home Festival back to Darlington. Last year was our biggest festival yet and we hope to grow on that this year. We've got brilliant headliners such as Avalanche Party, Finn Forster, Michael Gallagher and coming all the way from the Isle Of Wight to headline our Noisy Daughters stage, Coach Party – definitely not to be missed! We've also got our Hilarity Bites stage bursting with comedy talent.

We love working with our regional partners to make LTH such a special eclectic event. This year we have linked up with Shakk from BBC Introducing for the first time for some very special Shakk Festival Pickks showcasing some of the quality new bands he has championed on his radio show.
Indie Intros: Maggie's

Hi, we're Jeanette and Alex MacMurray, and we own Maggie's Coffee & Kitchen on Duke Street, Darlington.

Maggie's is a coffee shop serving breakfast, brunch and lunch with homemade cakes, delicious coffee and a variety of teas.

We've been established since 2003 and we love the town! Duke Street is a bustling place filled with successful small independent businesses - there is nowhere better to be. We support each other and look after each other, such a community feeling here in Darlington.

We are a wife and husband duo, each with over 35 years of experience in hospitality, who head a small hardworking team. We started the business after years of working with other independent catering establishments, family run hotels and restaurants around Darlington. We have always been driven and have taken our work to high standards. We wanted to have our own crack at starting our own business and it’s proved to be hard work, but so rewarding.

We love to try new independent businesses around this country and meet amazing people. We like to try new ingredients and flavours that give us ideas and inspiration for our own food. Basically we like to make amazing food and serve it to content happy people who enjoy the whole experience.

That “life is good” feeling is what we aspire to give.

Our favourite place to go in Darlington is Sortie, Houndgate, ran by Lesley and Will - fabulous people who work extremely hard and have created a unique little charcuterie and bar with amazing food, wine and cocktails. It’s just a perfect escapism.

Follow Maggie's on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok.
