Events Happening in Darlington in 2026

Darlington is no stranger to running great events. Each year, the town hosts numerous events and activities for all age-groups. We’ve recently just concluded our year-long celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Although our fantastic railway museum, Hopetown, is open all year round to learn about Darlington’s railway history.

But when one celebration ends, another several begin! We have many exciting events happening throughout 2026. Continue reading on to find out about the biggest events coming to Darlington over the next few months.

Proms In The Park (July 5)

Proms In The Park takes place every year, in Darlington’s South Park. The musical event is held form 3pm to 7pm and is set to be held at the famous bandstand in the park. Tickets are not required; however, those who attend are encouraged to donate to the Army Benevolent Fund whilst there. It’s also important to remember that this event does gather a large traction, so arrive early to secure the best spots.

Darlington By The Sea (July 18 to July 26)

Enjoy Darlington By The Sea for a whole week this summer, for free! We’re bringing the beach to you, right in the heart of Darlington town centre along with (hopefully) nine days of pure sunshine. The Market Square will be home to a giant sandpit and there will be several activities to join in with, such as balloon modelling and face painting.

Darlington 10k, 5k, Junior 3k and Family Fun Run (August 2)

Darlington is the place to be for runners on August 2! There are four races taking place over the course of the day. There is a 10k and a 5k happening in and around the town centre for adult runners. For those who are slightly younger but still keen runners, there is the Junior 3k. There is also a Family Fun Run happening to kickstart the day.

Darlington Pride (August 8)

Pride celebrations will be returning to Darlington this summer and is an all-inclusive event. The day will begin at 11am with a march through the town centre, followed by a day packed of festivities. There will be a variety of live music, local business stalls, street theatre plus food and drink.

Misfits Mega Weekend (August 15 to August 16)

The Misfit Market comes to Darlington every month, but this is a chance to get involved for a whole weekend. The alternative market will be held in the town centre with stalls offering all sorts of weird and wonderful items. This is a great chance to grab art, accessories, clothing, collectibles and much more.

Legends & Fairy Tales (August 20)

An event made for all the Kingdom to attend! Head to Darlington town centre to enjoy a wonderful live theatre production, meet some of your favourite characters and delight in games throughout the day. Remember to dress to impress!

Darlington Restaurant Week (October 24 to October 30)

Restaurant Week is back this October in Darlington! This biannual event enables you to indulge in your favourite meals for less. It is also a fantastic opportunity to try and explore more restaurants in our bustling town.

Christmas Light Switch On (November 15)

It’s never too soon to start thinking about Christmas! The annual Christmas light switch on will be happening in the Market Square on November 15. The event will begin at 4pm, with live music and special guests, with the lights being switched on at 5:30pm.

Ice Sculpture Trail (December 12)

The Ice Sculpture Trail is due to be happening around the town centre in the middle of December, just in time to chime in with the Christmas excitement. Ice sculptures will be able to be spotted at key locations throughout the town centre. Keep your eyes peeled for further information about this event!

Get competitive as a family at The DC’s bowling alley

The Dolphin Centre is now home to a five-lane bowling alley, making it a perfect place to enjoy Father’s Day together as a family. Book a lane and get competitive with each other, maybe even allow Dad to win. It is Father’s Day after all! Afterwards, why not head into the town centre for a bite to eat and prolong the celebrations?

Darlington has a rich cultural heritage; starting out as a small Anglo-Saxon settlement, it quickly became a bustling market town, and then the birthplace of modern railway. Running since 1983, Darlington Community Carnival celebrates the town’s vivid history. This year, the carnival is arriving at Hopetown Darlington on Saturday 27 June, bringing together local traders, businesses, and community groups – take a look at what’s coming up.

Food and Drinks

The theme of this year’s carnival is ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. The food and drink doesn’t disappoint with dishes from all over the globe, brought to you by local businesses:

New Independent Businesses in Darlington You Need to Know About

Darlington is bustling full of incredible independent businesses. So much so it can be difficult to keep track of all the new businesses coming into our town. But not to worry, we have compiled a list below of the exciting new businesses that have taken up residence in Darlington over recent weeks.

Arcadia

Arcadia has only just opened its doors to gaming lovers and is based on Skinnergate. It promises the “ultimate arcade experience”. The entertainment complex is packed with VR games, racing simulators, console gaming, retro games and more. There is also more to come such as a rage room, sports simulator and a laser tag arena. As well as being full to the brim of thrilling games, there is also a bar offering themed cocktails, beers and spirits, soft drinks, coffee and snacks. It is the perfect day out for all ages and no booking is required.

The Flameroom

The Flameroom has recently opened on Bondgate, serving prime steaks. The meat centred restaurant has a broad menu with several steak options to choose from, including fillet, ribeye, sirloin and prime rump. As well as steaks, The Flame Room also offers burgers and parmos. They also have a selection of vegetarian and vegan options available.

The Chopping Block

The Chopping Block only opened to customers as of last month and is situated between The Vault and Shape Patisserie. Founded by Ory Vanes and Matt Waistel, the duo spotted a gap in the market. They’ve already acquired an experienced butcher, a shop manager and two apprentices. All the meat is sourced from around the North East and North Yorkshire regions, to stay local and sustainable.

The Greedy Goat (Hurworth)

The Greedy Goat also opened in April and is situated in the nearby village of Hurworth, on Church Row. The new deli aims to positively promote healthy living and locally sourced food. The deli serves a wide range of healthy food such as yoghurts, breakfast oats, kefir pots and salad pots, as well as pastries and sandwiches. There is plans for The Greedy Goat to expand into a restaurant soon.

The Loft

The Loft is the sister restaurant to already super-popular Asian restaurant, Taipan, and is based on Crown Street. The Loft offers an extensive menu of steaks, seafood, burgers, parmos, ribs and chicken. They also have a selection of delicious sharing steak boards to choose from.

Jasper’s Tasty Treats

One for the pooches! Jasper’s Tasty Treats has recently opened on Blackwellgate and they sell a range of pure, grain free, 100% natural dog treats. As well as treats, the new pet shop also sells a wide variety of pet accessories. It is the perfect place to visit if you’d like to treat your pet to some biscuits or a new lead. Darlington have plenty of places to visit with your precious pooch, see whereabouts in town dogs are also allowed to visit here.

The Corner House

Talking Tides have took over The Corner House on Duke Street. The pub now boasts 11 different craft beers, including several of Talking Tide's own unique brands.

Darlington’s independent business scene is bustling and is certainly worth exploring. It is fantastic to see so many new businesses joining the hundreds of already established independents in our town.

Things to do:

Looking for a sweet treat? Try Kaspa’s! Kaspa's is the UK's biggest dessert parlour and one of Darlington’s top spots for desserts. Grab freshly made waffles, crepes, cakes, shakes and more with the kids this half term.

Burn off some of those desserts with a good soft play session. Under the Sea, Darlington’s beloved nautical themed soft play, offer lots of interactive features and fun characters. Enjoy a bit of a rest and a sit down while the kids entertain themselves for a while.

Have a go at taking on the kids at ten-pin bowling over half term. At DC Bowl they have got it covered, whether you want to enjoy a more hands-off and relaxed approach; you can grab a drink and sit back and watch the kids play, or whether you want to get competitive and show them what you’re made of! Food and drinks are available, and lanes can be booked online.

Create & Paint are a family-run creative studio in the centre of Darlington and offer a range of crafty activities. They also have a wonderful café with a range of drinks and snacks. You can book a session on their website or turn up on the day; however, spaces may be limited.

It may not be quite summertime yet but if you fancy a stroll and a bit of fresh air, pop down to South Park where the kids can enjoy the play parks and feed the ducks. The café is always a welcome space for families (and dogs included) and a visit to the aviary is usually a nice way to round the day off.

For the train lovers of the family, head to Hopetown Darlington, the award-winning railway themed visitor attraction. There’s plenty of bookable activities to do for little ones over half term or take a more laid-back approach to your visit and let them explore the varying exhibitions. How to get here

Darlington is incredibly well connected, so no matter where you are, it’s simple to get there. There are regular trains from major cities like Durham, Newcastle and York that run directly to the town with plenty of hotels within walking distance. Darlington by the Sea from Sat 19 to Wed 23 July - FREE - head to Darlington for five days of sun (hopefully), sea and sand for this ever-popular annual family event. From 11am until 5pm each day families can enjoy free sandcastle building in a giant sandpit in the market square, sand art, activities and lots more fun and games.

Railway Pioneers at Hopetown Darlington – Three historical rockstars of the railway are heading to Hopetown Darlington. From Fri 4 April to Sun 22 June, you can see the original Locomotion No 1, the Pen-y-Darren and Steam Elephant together under one roof. This is a free exhibition as part of the S&DR200 celebrations with the trains loaned from National Railway Museum, Beamish, Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales and IMechE. Darlington Food Festival – Everyone loves a good food festival and you can sink your teeth into this one from Fri 2 to Mon 5 May, making for a very tasty Bank Holiday weekend. The town centre will be bursting with an array of stalls offering everything from baked goods to artisan alcohol.

GrooveFest 25 – From Fri 16 to Sun 18 May, Darlington will play host to a weekend of disco, soul and Motown music. Across the town centre, there’ll be a number of artists and DJs playing in a range of venues. It would be a great way to spend a couple of days in the area!

STEAM to the Future at Hopetown Darlington – This free exhibition will be at Hopetown Darlington from Fri 11 July to Sun 5 October will reflect on the history of steam railways and how the rail industry is gearing up for a second revolution driven by the growing green technologies sector in Teesside. It will feature an immersive installation by A.A.Murakami (AKA Studio Swine), inspired by steam as a source of power, and the chance to create a train for the 22nd century using virtual reality software. Darlington By The Sea – The ever-popular Darlington By The Sea will be returning on Sat 19 to Wed 23 July for five days of sun, sea and sand in the town centre. From 11am to 5pm each day, families can enjoy free sandcastle building in a giant sandpit, face painting, activities, and lots of fun and games.

Diwali in Darlington

On Saturday 26 October, Darlington will be celebrating the festival of light and colour, Diwali. From 11am to 6pm, the historical streets of the town centre will come alive with the sights and sounds of the annual parade, and you’re invited! Darlington Christmas Lights Switch On

Start Darlington’s official countdown to Christmas with the Lights Switch On. This is an incredibly popular local event, featuring live performances and an appearance from Santa Claus, the big man himself, and finishing off with a short firework display. This is the perfect winter event to get yourself and your family in the festive spirit and to see Darlington come alive with Christmas magic. This event will be held on Sunday 17 November with entertainment starting from 4pm.

Enchanted Forest Reindeer Trail

The newly redeveloped Hopetown visitor attraction will be decking the halls of the historic Carriage Works and transforming the site into a fantastical forest of magical trees and woodland creatures. You’re invited to take a wondrous walk, hunt for clues and find all of the reindeer to help Santa get on his way for Christmas Eve. This event will be running from Tuesday 26 November to Tuesday 31 December and tickets cost £5 per child. As entry to the Hopetown site is free, you’ll be able to explore the museum too! The Big Christmas Assembly

We all love a bit of nostalgia and no one knows that better than James B Partridge, the creator of Primary School Assembly Bangers Live. His shows sell out all across the country and he’s bringing the Christmas edition to the Darlington Hippodrome on Thursday 28 November. He’ll be playing all of our favourite festive tunes that we sang in school assemblies and, of course, singing along is absolutely encouraged. Sleeping Beauty

Panto is always such a huge hit as we get closer to Christmas and the Darlington Hippodrome are renowned for having a top show for the whole family to enjoy. This year, it’s all about Sleeping Beauty, the classic story of Princess Aurora who pricks her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel and forced to sleep for 100 years. Starring Lee Mead as the Prince and Su Pollard as the evil Aunt Carabosse, this is sure to be spectacular! Santa at Hopetown

As if the Enchanted Forest Reindeer Trail wasn’t enough, you can also meet the big man himself at Hopetown this winter. Every Friday from 6 December to 23 December, there will be a two hour event where children can make a holly crown and listen to some traditional, festive storytelling. Ice Sculpture Trail

There’s nothing that says winter quite like an ice sculpture trail and Darlington’s will head to town on Saturday 7 December. This trail is always a fantastic and exciting way to explore the centre, with hand carved sculptures guiding the way. There’ll be a whole host of characters and winter-themed icons to find, so keep your eyes peeled. And don’t forget to snap a selfie with your favourite sculpture and share it on social media!

Last Train Home Festival returns to Darlington for seventh year

The popular live music and comedy festival which champions grassroots acts is set to return to Darlington town centre on Saturday 7 September. Last Train Home festival is an all-day multi-venue event organised by Tracks Darlington with five stages across venues such as The Forum, Darlington Hippodrome and The Hullabaloo Theatre hosting live music from national and local artists. The day will also bring stand-up sets from upcoming comedians via the Hilarity Bites Comedy Club.

The 2024 festival line-up includes alt-indie headliners Avalanche Party, local musician Finn Forster, Isle of Wight natives Coach Party, plus singer-songwriter Michael Gallagher on the music stages, with comedians Bethany Black and Mick Ferry and even more music and comedy acts to be announced. Up and coming North East act Jodie Nicholson also joins the festival which will finish with an afterparty DJ set from James Watson at The Forum.

Last Train Home Festival is curated and managed by Tracks Darlington, a community focused arts organisation, utilising funds from Arts Council England, Creative Darlington and Tees Valley Combined Authority.

Sarah Wilson, Co-founder and Events Manager at Tracks Darlington says: “'We are so excited to be able to bring the Last Train Home Festival back to Darlington. Last year was our biggest festival yet and we hope to grow on that this year. We've got brilliant headliners such as Avalanche Party, Finn Forster, Michael Gallagher and coming all the way from the Isle Of Wight to headline our Noisy Daughters stage, Coach Party – definitely not to be missed! We've also got our Hilarity Bites stage bursting with comedy talent.

We love working with our regional partners to make LTH such a special eclectic event. This year we have linked up with Shakk from BBC Introducing for the first time for some very special Shakk Festival Pickks showcasing some of the quality new bands he has championed on his radio show. We also have the return of LTH longtime partner and north east culture champions NARC who are programming one of the stages in the Hippodrome. I love that different programmers feed into the festival making it a big gorgeous melting pot of good stuff!”

Can I get the train there?

Hopetown Darlington shares a site with North Road (Darlington) railway station. The station is served hourly, in each direction, by Northern Trains on the Saltburn to Bishop Auckland railway line. From here you can connect to the main Darlington Railway Station (Bank Top) which benefits from mainline connections to the rest of Britain.

The site is approximately 30 minutes from Newcastle and York, two hours from Edinburgh and two and a half hours from London.

Is Hopetown Darlington accessible?

There are limited accessible parking spaces in the Hopetown car park (DL1 1LG). McNay Street will also offer accessible parking spaces that are closer to the attraction entrance.

Accessible toilets are located within the Goods Shed, North Road Station Museum and the Carriage Works buildings. There is also an accessible toilet near to The Kiosk.

There is a ramp that leads up to the Goods Shed main entrance and also to North Road Station Museum's entrance. There is a lift to access the bridge leading to Darlington Locomotive Works and there is a lift within the multi-level Carriage Works building.

The Wagon Woods playground is accessible for wheelchairs and even includes a wheelchair-friendly slide.

Maggie's is a coffee shop serving breakfast, brunch and lunch with homemade cakes, delicious coffee and a variety of teas.

We've been established since 2003 and we love the town! Duke Street is a bustling place filled with successful small independent businesses - there is nowhere better to be. We support each other and look after each other, such a community feeling here in Darlington.

We are a wife and husband duo, each with over 35 years of experience in hospitality, who head a small hardworking team. We started the business after years of working with other independent catering establishments, family run hotels and restaurants around Darlington. We have always been driven and have taken our work to high standards. We wanted to have our own crack at starting our own business and it’s proved to be hard work, but so rewarding.

We love to try new independent businesses around this country and meet amazing people. We like to try new ingredients and flavours that give us ideas and inspiration for our own food. Basically we like to make amazing food and serve it to content happy people who enjoy the whole experience.

How to spend a day with family in Darlington

With the school holidays quickly approaching, you might be looking to plan some family-friendly days into your diary. No matter if you’re looking to entertain toddlers and small children or teenagers, there’s something to suit everyone in Darlington. From creative activities and theatre shows, to reconnecting with history and nature, there are so many ways that you can spend a day here!

We’ve put together some ideas to help you build an itinerary that fits your family best, so take a look and start planning your trip.

For the creatives

If you and your kids love to make and get creative together, there are a couple of amazing options in Darlington town centre. The first is Create and Paint on Grange Road, a studio that welcomes people of all ages and abilities to show their artistic side. There are several different activities to choose from, including foam clay, decopatch, build your own teddy and ceramic painting. It’s a haven for the whole family and your children will love making something that is completely unique to them.

Have you ever tried your hand at making fresh pasta? Head to The Happy Place Next Door, owned by The Pasta Shop, where you and your kids can have a go at making pasta dough from scratch and use a pasta machine to stretch it out. Running on Saturdays or in small group private sessions, these classes are brilliant for pasta making beginners, and you’ll get to walk away with your own creation and some homemade sauce. The classes are amazing fun and a great way to learn new skills!

For the theatre lovers

For large-scale shows and productions, look no further than the Darlington Hippodrome. This award-winning venue plays host to big name touring shows and events, they also have plenty on for families throughout the holidays. This includes film screenings, workshops and activities for children of all ages to get involved with. You can also pop into the Hippo Lounge for a drink and a bite to eat to round off the visit, making it a great spot to spend a couple of hours.

Theatre fans will also love the Majestic Theatre on Bondgate. This is a small-scale theatre that’s home to amateur dramatics performances, comedy nights, pantomimes, live music and so much more. There’s always plenty of family-friendly shows on, but also lots to book on your child-free nights too. And if you have little ones, they’ll love Gi Gi’s soft play on the ground floor too!

For the budding historians

The North East’s newest visitor attraction, Hopetown, will be opening on Tuesday 16 July for everyone interested in the local railway history. This 7.5 acre site is home to the North Road Station Museum, an exhibition hall, a railway-themed digital media experience, a café, a shop, a play area and so much more. Admission is free, but some exhibitions, events and activities carry a separate charge, so booking via the website (hopetowndarlington.co.uk) is recommended. Alongside all of the railway memorabilia and information, the first exhibition on opening is Brick Journeys, a transport-themed LEGO showcase, complete with brick hot air balloons, rocket and submarine. This is definitely going to be a hotspot for families over the school holidays.

You can find another piece of history in Darlington at Tees Cottage Pumping Station on Coniscliffe Road, which is a Victorian water pumping station at Broken Scar. This spot is open on select dates throughout the year where you’ll get to see the machinery in motion, see blacksmith demonstrations, miniature railway rides, and the opportunity to find out more about how this vital building in revolutionising the local water supply.

For the gamers

Gaming fans will love Sim King Gaming on King Street, whether they’re teens, tweens or younger. From Xboxes to PlayStations and even a virtual reality headset, this place is perfect for gamers to spend a couple of hours. They’ve got hundreds of games on offer, including top names and old classics, and potentially some you’ve never come across before, so there’s something for everyone. You can book by the hour and there’s options to book parties too, which could be ideal for teen groups over the holidays.

If your kids are into puzzle games and taking on challenges, why not book a slot at Cluedini? This Crown Street spot is home to three different themed escape rooms, each with varying difficulty and packed to the rafters with fun. You and your team will be put to the test to find clues, solve crimes, recover loot and ultimately break out of the room. This would be great to do as a family or if your teen is looking for something to do with their friends, this could be a fantastic option for them to do as a group.

For the energetics

If your kids are always a ball of energy and need a way to burn it off, take a look at DC Bowl at the Dolphin Centre. Everyone loves bowling, so why not book in for a family game and get that competitive spirit going? This bowling alley features five lanes, so it’s small but perfectly formed, making it ideal for get togethers with other groups too. It’s also a fabulous place for a party, so if your child has a birthday during the school holidays, this could be a great option.

For a runabout and to blow off some steam, South Park is the perfect place. This 91 acre park is home to a lake, aviary, bandstand, skatepark and a recently renovated playground. There’s also a huge events field that offers plenty of space to set up a make shift football pitch or take your dog for a run. It’s a gorgeous place to visit in the summer, so take the kids along for an energetic morning, then swing by the café for lunch or pack a picnic!

For the shopaholics

One thing that you’re definitely not short of in Darlington is shops. If you’ve got shopaholics in the family or you want to take your kids out to pick a few things up, there are plenty of shops to choose from. The town centre is a paradise for those who love to shop independent, so if you’re looking for all things quirky, give Whimsickal on Post House Wynd a try. For all things treats and chocolate, pay Inspired Chocolate on Grange Road a visit, or drop into Bakerman in Clark’s Yard for a freshly baked brownie.

As well as the thriving independent scene, there’s also plenty of big high street names to shop with. The centre is one of the few places in the local area to have a department store, so you can find a whole host of brands in House of Fraser across a range of departments, like beauty, fashion and home. The Cornmill Centre is also a hotspot for high street names, such as Primark, New Look, Next, Waterstones and so many more. If your teen is in the mood for a bit of a spending spree, they’ll love it here!

For the toddlers

Theatre Hullabaloo are the only specialist children’s theatre North of London and they’re amazing if you’ve got toddlers or small children. They believe in bringing touring shows and performances to children, as well as a programme of events and activities in The Hullabaloo on Borough Road. This includes time in their free creative play space (there are neurodiverse-friendly sessions too), live show experiences and a café to unwind in afterwards. It’s an absolute wonderland for children to learn and play in.

You can never go wrong with soft play if you have toddlers and the soft play in the Dolphin Centre is excellent. This space features an under the sea and pirate island theme, offering a nautical adventure for the whole family to enjoy. Children can pop their shoes off and dive into a world of oceanic characters, ball pits, slides and hiding places. Even if you don’t have toddlers, this soft play is great for kids aged up to 8, so if you need a way to fill an hour or two, this could be ideal.
