Free Children's summer activities

We are please to confirm we are providing a summertime of free outdoor activities for all children aged 7-12 years, living in Darlington and surrounding villages.

Following last summer’s huge success, to support families, to encourage children to move more and enjoy the outdoors - as part of the childhood healthy weight plan - the council’s public health team is working together with Outdoor Ambition Limited to provide another summertime of free outdoor summer activities to all children, aged 7–12 years, living in the borough of Darlington.

Children benefit from moving more. Playing, walking, running, jumping, dancing, riding bikes and scooters* and playing team games, all help to improve behaviour, attention levels, self-confidence, social skills, friendships, health and fitness, mood, sleep and maintain a healthy weight and strengthen muscles and bones.

Whether it’s a game of rounders, a kick about or trying a team challenge, free outdoor summer fun activities are on offer during every weekday throughout the summer holiday, Monday 25 July – Friday 2 September.

All activities are free and will run at the same time each week for the full duration of the school summer holidays.

There’s no need to book, children can just turn up and join in but please make sure they wear suitable clothing and footwear to run and play in, sunscreen if needed, and bring plenty of water to drink.

Councillor Jon Clarke, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people said “We are delighted to be able to offer all children, living in Darlington and surrounding villages, aged from 7–12 years, free outdoor activities again this year. Last year was a huge success with all children enjoying the activity sessions.

“We hope this year’s activities will encourage children to enjoy the outdoors, move more, discover new talents, and loves of sport and meet new friends.”

Lloyd Murray from Outdoor Ambition Ltd. added “These activities offer fantastic opportunities for young children to get outdoors and have some fun!

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone and get moving… Here’s to another fabulous summer of fun.”

A healthy diet and regular exercise have been medically proven to help us live healthier lives, reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, breast, and colon cancer as well as boost low mood and help improve sleep quality and concentration levels.

There are many ways to move more – take the stairs rather than the lift, walk rather than

drive or catch the bus. Lovely parks and open spaces; great walking and cycle routes and a new indoor bowling alley are in easy reach, so why not get those trainers on, embrace the healthy you and move more to reap the health benefits?
