Funding to boost science activities at railway museum

First published: Tuesday 24 May 2022

Funding has been awarded to the Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum to help explore the everyday science of the railways.

The Royal Society has awarded £3,350 to the museum through its Places for Science grants scheme, which aims to fund projects that tell the stories of science and scientists relevant to communities across the UK.

The funding will enable the museum to work with Big Science UK to develop new STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities for families and community groups.

Sarah Gouldsbrough, learning and access officer at the museum, explained:

“We will be using our collections to inspire workshops and activities around the everyday science of the railways, bringing both the history and science to life in a fun way that all ages can enjoy.

“We’re also planning to hold sessions in community venues around Darlington for families and groups to take part too, so would urge people to keep a look out for more news as we develop our ideas!”
