Over the moon with Under the Sea improvements

YOUNGSTERS are over the moon with the new improvements to the popular Under the Sea soft play area in the Dolphin Centre Darlington which opened on 28th May.

The Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Cyndi Hughes, attended the opening of the improved facility which has been closed since the first Lockdown in March 2020.

The popular soft play now boasts a new extended toddler area which will give mobile youngsters the chance to move around more and there are new children’s role play rooms where youngsters can explore and let their imagination run wild. The design of the newly extended toddler area was in response to parents requesting a separate space for little ones to play whilst older children enjoyed the features in the main structure.

The improvements form part of a £1.7m investment in the leisure facilities of the Dolphin Centre including the newly opened DC Bowl ten pin bowling alley.

The existing soft play structure has also been completely refurbished with lots of new and exciting features and interactives.  The catering offer has also seen an upgrade and customers can enjoy a wider range of drinks, food and snacks whilst visiting the soft play.

The Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Cyndi Hughes, said:

“For many years Under the Sea has been a firm favourite for young families, offering great family fun in a safe space and under one roof. I am delighted to attend the opening of this extended play area and I’m sure that regular visitors and new ones too will be excited by what’s on offer.”

Councillor Kevin Nicholson, Darlington Borough Council’s; cabinet member for health, leisure and housing added:

“These improvements will offer even more choice to our customers especially those who have children of different ages and needs. We are constantly working on ways to improve and enhance what we offer at the Dolphin Centre to make sure it meets the needs of our centre users.

“This extension, alongside the new DC Bowl facility, and existing gym, sports hall and pool facilities, will ensure that the Centre is the number one local destination for indoor family leisure and sports.”

Under the Sea has been open since 2006 and was part of the Dolphin Centre major refurbishment. Since then it has welcomed around a 100 young visitors a day. It is suitable for children aged 0-8years and open seven days a week. It is hoped that birthday parties at Under the Sea can resume once current Covid restrictions ease.
